Chapter 34: SC

When a sensation is strong enough, it bleeds into the other senses. For instance, a perfect painting may bear with it a pure note, generated by the mind to represent harmony. The smell of grilled steak beckons the soon to come accompanying taste. And the shock of cold shower water strikes the discord of a broken piano chord.

When Siri’s voice came through the gap after months of being suppressed, it assaulted all my sensations at once.

It was the sight of open meadows and mountain ranges, of land unblemished by barriers. The scent of fresh cut grass on a spring morning, accompanied by the tingling rush just before the start of a race. The taste of cool spring water of my lips, liquid that had never been confined to a plastic bottle, pure. But the sound was the greatest – the blare of trumpets before battle, that reaches into the hearts of soldiers and pulls them from the depths of despair. That promises freedom to all who hear. That strikes down walls.

The words started as a whisper, barely comprehensible through the hole in the glass. But as Blake prepared to strike at me again, they called to my consciousness, stealing my attention. And not just my attention, but everyone’s in the room. Blake forgot his blow mid-strike, Estella’s shrieks died down as the memories of monsters chasing her faded, and Arial drifted to a stop in midair. The words repeated, the same simple phrase over and over, at first unintelligible. But then comprehension started sinking in through the upper layers of my consciousness, taking on meaning as they seized hold and dove deeper into my thoughts. Until my heartbeat tuned with the syllables, my attention captivated, my will bending beneath their call.

“Break down the walls,” Siri’s voice commanded, more like an angelic declaration than singsong, growing in strength until it reverberated throughout the room. “Break down the walls!”

Blake was the first to react, altering his momentum, which had been intended for me back towards the glass. With each strike, more holes and cracks formed, more opportunities for sounds waves to escape as the volume of her voice increased.

Estella followed, blue light building in her hands, her eyes searching for a target as the intensity grew. Within the glass, Candis jerked, her power forgotten – instead, her fists hammered against the inside of the glass fruitlessly, bouncing away without damage in the sections that Blake had not pulverized. Arial froze in her midair flight, conflicted, then slowly drifted towards the door, yanking it open then trying to pull it off its hinges. And Ennia closed her eyes, her hands outstretched towards the concrete, where long cracks of bone started to form in the material, splitting it apart like ice wedged between weathering rocks.

Each of them worked to destroy the room with increased urgency, to break down the walls of the prison. Just as Siri’s words commanded.

But the problem with words is that their meanings are left up to interpretation. And
